RealSSD C300 Demo: MacBook® Side-by-Side

We’ve seen a lot of interest in our C300 SSD from Apple users, so we put two identical MacBooks side by side to show the huge performance gains possible with a RealSSD C300 drive.

There are a lot of thorough performance benchmarks out there—our effort here was to create a simple video that shows what differences you might expect to see in everyday applications when you install a RealSSD C300. We cloned the factory hard drive onto a Micron C300 SSD and ran a few simple tasks.

    Problems with the RealSS?

I have been using several different brands of SSDs for years – MTRON, OCZ, G.Skill Falcon…and its true, its hard to go back to an HDD…not only is the performance difference tremendous, but the lack of noise is much more appreciated then one would expect.

I do a lot of video transcoding, which is actually more CPU intensive, but not having a noisy 15k SATA drive thrashing away under my desk is wonderful.

I also recently ordered an SSD for one of my production database servers, as some of my queries were taking too long on a Fujitsu MAS Ultra-SCSI.

Now, I could have sat down and laboriously reworked my already-optimized SQL for 20-30 hours, but after testing an SSD as the data drive, the problem queries sped up by a factor of 10. Problem solved.

    Alice,

You’ll notice that Crucial has responded on their forum, but I think the answer bears repeating here:

“Yes, we are aware of the issue Anand has encountered, and have been working to understand the conditions and parameters he was using to recreate the scenario in our own labs. We’ve done thousands of hours of testing on the C300 and have sent the drive to dozens of independent testers, receiving phenomenal response on how it has performed. We are confident in the high quality and unmatched performance of the C300.”

In short — our engineers are on top of this.

Could I replace my 2007 iMac system drive with an SSD?

    Zeph,
The C300 is compatible with any system that uses a SATA hard drive connection. I’ve never done an iMac drive swap, but from what I’ve seen online, it’s pretty involved—make sure you know what you’re getting into before you start. You might want to get an adapter to make the 2.5″ C300 fit the 3.5″ drive slot, too. Let us know if you decide to take the plunge.

    Hi,
As a developer, I spend my work day using a virtual machine with 45GB using Windows 7 (x64) as the host operating system. Can you provide any feedback about the C300 performance with virtual machines?
    Thanks

I’m curious about the virtual machine question too.

I am a photographer and I am curious how this RealSSD will improve my performance in Lightroom 3 with RAW photos. I work with roughly 200 -1200 images for portrait and wedding photos respectively. I am curious if this will speed up previews showing up, things like zooming to 100% on 10-20MB RAW files. When I zoom to 100% on my current system I have to wait 5 seconds for a preview to load
